Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth sometimes erupt incorrectly, leading to painful dental problems both now and in years to come.

Wisdom teeth removal can prevent these problems and avoid discomfort, serious health issues, and costlier procedures.

Dr. Brian K. Tavoian of Cedar City, UT, can remove your wisdom teeth with minimal discomfort to improve and protect your oral health.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that often come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Not all wisdom teeth are a problem, but if they erupt incorrectly, they can become trapped underneath the gum and bone tissue or press against a neighboring tooth (called impaction), leading to pain, infection, gum disease, or cysts. Impacted wisdom teeth should be removed.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Your dentist will take digital x-rays of your teeth during your scheduled dental exams to determine if you need wisdom tooth extraction.

Wisdom teeth can be removed when they are actively causing issues, or you can elect to have them removed while they are developing in order to avoid problems entirely.

By choosing preventative wisdom tooth extraction, you can avoid serious pain and health issues. You can also protect your teeth and avoid the need for dental implants, restorative dentistry, or orthodontics.

Consider Preventive Extraction To Avoid an Impacted Wisdom Tooth

Wisdom teeth usually erupt in your teenage years or early 20s. By maintaining regular appointments with Dr. Brian Tavoian at our Cedar City, UT, dental office, he can monitor a wisdom tooth as it develops. If it looks like the wisdom tooth will erupt at an angle or remain trapped under the gums, Dr. Tavoian can remove the tooth as a way to prevent complications.

In addition to causing pain, an impacted wisdom tooth can cause misaligned teeth and the need for more intensive dental procedures. And since wisdom teeth are not essential to the function and health of your smile, preventive extraction is a common and effective means of keeping your smile healthy. Dr. Tavoian offers many sedation options to maintain your comfort during this treatment, and accepts CareCredit® financing to help you budget for any out-of-pocket costs.

Whether you are interested in this treatment for yourself or your child, contact Brian K. Tavoian Family Dentistry today to have your wisdom teeth examined.

Had a great time having my wisdom tooth extracted. The pain is almost gone. No lolly pops though. It's probably what brought me there to begin with . Looking forward to my next visit.

Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Hurt?

Dr. Tavoian offers nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation options to make this dentistry procedure as comfortable and painless as possible. We will recommend the best sedation option for your needs depending on the complexity of your case.

A Closer Look at Wisdom Teeth Removal

Excess gum tissue may need to be removed to allow access to the wisdom tooth. Specialized tools allow the dentist to reach the tooth. If the wisdom tooth erupts at an angle, it can damage surrounding teeth & cause cascading misalignment.
Impacted wisdom teeth can damage surrounding teeth and cause complex dental issues like cascading misalignment. Wisdom tooth removal is far simpler and more affordable than solutions like dental implants, which could become necessary due to complications caused by impacted wisdom teeth.

How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Sedation

First, Dr. Tavoian will make sure you are comfortably sedated, and provide local anesthesia to your mouth so you don't feel pain from the procedure.

Incision

If eruption has not yet occurred, Dr. Tavoian will incise the tissue to access the tooth.

Extraction

Dr. Tavoian will use a dental instrument to gently rock the tooth back and forth in its socket. Your tooth may need to be separated into pieces before removal.

Sutures

The extraction site will then be cleared of any debris and sutured shut.

Gauze

Gauze may be placed over the extraction site to minimize bleeding and encourage a blood clot to form.

Aftercare

If you chose to receive sedation during your wisdom tooth extraction, you may feel drowsy after your wisdom tooth removal.

Every patient recovers differently, but you may have pain or swelling in your jaw or around the extraction site for a few days following the procedure. Swelling can be treated with a cool compress placed against the jaw, and pain can be managed with a heating pad or over-the-counter medication.

Our dentistry practice recommends drinking plenty of fluids and eating soft foods like soup, pasta, and rice while you heal.

Preventing Dry Socket

Blood clots will form at the extraction sites following the removal of these molars. It is important that these blood clots stay in place in order for your jaw to heal properly. Dry socket occurs when these clots become dislodged too soon, and can lead to pain and infection. While recovering, there are a few things you should avoid to prevent dry socket:

  • drinking through a straw
  • eating hard, sticky, or crunchy foods
  • rinsing your mouth with a harsh mouthwash
  • smoking
  • brushing your teeth at the site of your extractions

Call our Cedar City, UT, office if you have persistent pain or swelling after the procedure.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

This animation illustrates how impacted wisdom teeth can affect your smile. Preventive extraction is far more economical than having to use solutions like dental implants to correct the problems caused by impacted wisdom teeth.

How Can I Pay For This?

If your wisdom teeth are impacted and causing health problems, your insurance will contribute to the cost of the procedure.

If you don't have insurance, our office in Cedar City can help you apply for CareCredit. This allows you to pay in affordable monthly installments to help make treatment fit your budget. Rest assured, this procedure will cost less than future treatments such as dental implants, which can become necessary without prompt wisdom tooth removal.
