Free Consult,
Clear Plan

A complimentary consultation includes digital x-rays and a clear assessment of whether your wisdom teeth need to come out now, later, or not at all. You leave with a plan rather than a sales pitch.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Cost and Financing

The cost of wisdom teeth removal depends on how many teeth are involved, whether each tooth is fully erupted or impacted, and the sedation option you choose. Dr. Brian K. Tavoian walks every patient through a complete cost picture during a complimentary consultation, before the procedure is scheduled.

When wisdom teeth are impacted and causing health problems, dental insurance typically contributes to the cost. Our team files claims on your behalf to help you maximize coverage. For the balance, we work with CareCredit® so you can pay in affordable monthly installments rather than a single bill.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Not all wisdom teeth cause problems, but when they erupt incorrectly, they can become trapped under the gums and bone tissue or press against neighboring teeth. That positioning, called impaction, leads to pain, infection, gum disease, or cysts down the road.

By choosing preventive extraction, you avoid the serious pain an impacted wisdom tooth can cause and protect the rest of your smile from cascading damage. Removing wisdom teeth early with our dentist in Cedar City, UT, is also less expensive than the dental implants, restorative work, or orthodontics that may otherwise become necessary later.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process

Sedation

First, Dr. Tavoian will make sure you are comfortably sedated, and provide local anesthesia so you don't feel pain from the procedure.

Incision

If the wisdom tooth has not yet erupted through the gum, Dr. Tavoian makes a small incision to access the tooth and the surrounding bone.

Extraction

Dr. Tavoian gently rocks the tooth back and forth in its socket to release it. Some teeth are separated into smaller pieces before removal, especially when impaction is severe.

Sutures

The extraction site is cleared of debris and sutured shut. Most stitches are dissolvable and disappear on their own as the gum heals.

Gauze

Gauze is placed over the extraction site to minimize bleeding and encourage a blood clot to form. The clot is the start of the healing process.

Aftercare and Recovery

Most patients feel drowsy for a few hours after sedation and have some pain and swelling around the extraction site for several days. A cool compress against the jaw, a heating pad, or over-the-counter pain medication usually keeps the discomfort manageable. Soft foods like soup, pasta, and rice make the first few days easier on the healing site.

A blood clot forms at each extraction site, and the clot is essential to a smooth recovery. When a clot becomes dislodged too soon, the result is dry socket: persistent pain and a higher risk of infection. A few habits reduce the risk of dry socket:

  • Avoid drinking through a straw
  • Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods
  • Skip harsh mouthwashes during the first several days
  • Stop smoking during recovery
  • Do not brush directly at the extraction site

Call our Cedar City office if pain or swelling persists beyond the expected window or worsens after the first few days.

Common Questions
About Wisdom Teeth Removal

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Most patients have their wisdom teeth removed in their teens or early twenties, before the teeth are fully developed. Removing them early reduces the risk of impaction and shortens recovery time. Dr. Tavoian monitors wisdom teeth at routine appointments and recommends extraction when impaction or related issues become likely.

Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?

The procedure itself is performed with local anesthesia and the sedation option you choose, so you should not feel pain during the extraction. Most patients describe the days that follow as a manageable soreness rather than a sharp pain, and your aftercare instructions cover what works best for managing it.

How long is the recovery from wisdom teeth removal?

Most patients return to normal activity within three to five days. Soft tissue heals over one to two weeks, and the jawbone continues to fill in the extraction site over the following months.

What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?

Beyond the basic soft-food list, mashed potatoes, smoothies, yogurt, and broth-based soups all work well. Applesauce and scrambled eggs are easy options if you want something more substantive. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods, and skip the straw, since the suction can dislodge the healing blood clot.

Can wisdom teeth grow back after removal?

No. Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars, and once removed, they do not regrow. In very rare cases, patients develop extra molars known as supernumerary teeth, but those are unrelated to a previous extraction.
