When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

Root canals are a commonly performed restorative treatment that stops the spread of infection inside the tooth’s pulp. Root canal infections can result from trauma or an advanced cavity. Once Dr. Brian Tavoian has removed the infection and sealed your tooth off from bacteria, you can enjoy relief from oral pain and the restoration of oral health.

Dr. Tavoian has proudly been serving the greater Cedar City, UT, community since 1992. If you are anxious about undergoing a root canal procedure, our dental practice offers nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and IV sedation options to help patients feel more comfortable during treatment.

Process of root canal treatment

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

By the time an infection reaches the sensitive bundle of nerves and blood vessels that forms the pulp within a tooth, most patients are in considerable pain. Root canal therapy can relieve this discomfort while restoring oral health. Patients who undergo this safe and effective surgery at our Cedar City dental practice can benefit from:

  • A Healthier Smile: Root canal infections constitute a dental emergency. After bacteria reach the sensitive pulp area of a tooth, the infection can spread quickly. Left untreated, it can lead to an abscess, which can place the health of the supporting soft tissue and jawbone at risk.

  • Comfortable Treatment: Many people cringe at the idea of a root canal, but the treatment is often as painless as a cavity removal. During your procedure, Dr. Tavoian will use local anesthesia and sedation to ensure that you are comfortable throughout your treatment.

  • Preservation of Natural Tooth Structure: A successful root canal can prevent the need for extraction. Dr. Tavoian will take steps to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. Once the treated tooth has been sealed, you can retain the benefits of retaining your natural tooth.

Am I a Candidate for Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is recommended for patients who have an advanced root canal infection that requires immediate treatment or a tooth that is seriously decayed. If you are in extreme pain, our Cedar City dental practice will treat your symptoms as a dental emergency, meaning you will receive prompt treatment upon arriving at our office.

Candidates for root canal treatment are often experiencing:

  • Sudden onset of pain
  • Facial pain
  • Swollen gums
  • Pain radiating from a tooth
  • Recent trauma to a tooth

If you have experienced the sudden onset of pain in a tooth, you may have an advanced infection that requires immediate treatment.

A Look at the Procedure

When you arrive at our dental practice, x-rays or other forms of imaging may be taken to assess the severity of your infection. Before your treatment begins, your tooth will be numbed using a local anesthetic. Our office also offers three forms of sedation: nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and IV sedation so that you can remain relaxed during treatment.

Once you are comfortable, Dr. Tavoian will create a small hole at the top of your tooth. That opening will then be used to access the infected area inside the tooth. All infected tissue will be removed and the vacated space will be carefully cleaned. The final step involves filling the large cavity with a special rubber-like substance called gutta percha and capping your tooth with a dental crown, inlay, or onlay to provide structural support to your tooth. We recommend taking the rest of the day off work to recover.
