Explore Your Implant Candidacy

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be a candidate for dental implants. However, you must meet certain qualifications before undergoing the procedure. Some factors we take into consideration include:

Gum Tissue

One of the most important qualifying factors for dental implants is healthy gums. Patients with gum disease can receive periodontal treatment, such as scaling and root planing, at our office to restore oral health prior to implant placement.

Bone Density

Since implants rely on bone tissue for support, you must have sufficient jawbone density to qualify for treatment. Without the roots of a healthy tooth, your jawbone will diminish over time, causing bone recession in many patients with missing teeth. A preparatory bone graft or sinus lift to supplement your jawbone tissues can restore your candidacy.

Overall Health

Certain other health concerns, such as uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and smoking, can disqualify patients from dental implant treatment. Please go over your medical history with our dentist to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery and have a good chance of success with implants. We also recommend patients stop using tobacco products altogether, if possible.

Don't Qualify for Dental Implants Due to Bone Loss or Other Oral Health Issues?

Dental implants require patients to have sufficient bone density. This means patients who have already experienced significant bone loss may not initially qualify for implants. Fortunately, Dr. Tavoian can still help! For over 30 years, he has performed bone grafts for patients suffering from jawbone deterioration, along with other treatments such as extractions and root canal therapy to help improve overall oral health and create a healthy foundation for dental implants and restorations.

Bone grafting is a procedure that can restore areas of bone loss, allowing you to qualify for dental implants. The implants then provide the stimulation your jaw needs to prevent new bone loss. Some patients may be candidates for dental implant placement immediately after bone grafting. During your initial consultation at our Cedar City office, your dentist will determine if you will need preparatory bone grafting or other treatments before your implant placement.

Implant-supported prosthetics are far more secure than traditional options. Where older-style dentures can slip out of place, dentures secured by implants will always stay in place. If you're missing a single tooth, we can fit a crown to the dental implant with an abutment, eliminating the need to reshape a tooth.

Our Cedar City, UT, dentist's office is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We are also open Friday by appointment.

Your Dental Implant Treatment Timeline

While each patient's timeline will look slightly different, here are the main steps of implant treatment at our Cedar City dental practice:

We offer same-day prosthetics created in-house with CEREC technology and more complex restorations with the help of special technicians at our trusted dental lab.
We offer same-day prosthetics created in-house with CEREC technology and more complex restorations with the help of special technicians at our trusted dental lab.

Planning

We start by carefully planning your implant surgery to maximize the precision and chances of success. Using detailed scans of your smile, Dr. Tavoian identifies the optimal location for each implant and creates your custom surgical guides. Patients missing one tooth will need a single implant, while complete tooth loss may require six or more.

Implantation

Next, we schedule the procedure to place the titanium dental implants. We begin by administering anesthesia to prevent you from feeling the surgery. Dr. Tavoian also offers several types of sedation dentistry, including oral conscious, and intravenous (IV) sedatives. Once you are comfortable, we make small incisions in the gums and strategically place the required implant posts.

Osseointegration

Over the next few months, the titanium posts fuse with the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. Our dentist will check up on you during this period to assess your recovery and determine when you are ready for abutments.

Abutments

Once your jaw has healed, we will schedule your appointment to place abutments. During this minor procedure, Dr. Tavoian attaches small screw-like components to each post that will secure your implant-supported restoration.

Prosthetic Design

Depending on the type of restoration, you may qualify for a same-day prosthetic produced in-house with CEREC® technology. However, we typically make more complex restorations like dentures with the help of special technicians at our trusted dental lab.

Permanent Restoration

During your last appointment, we will attach your permanent crown, bridge, or denture. After making any necessary adjustments to the prosthetic, your treatment is complete and you can return to your normal routine.

State-of-the-Art
Technology

/

Our Cedar City practice uses advanced techniques and technology, such as 3D imaging and guided surgery for optimal implant placement. This further improves your chances of implant fusion and success. 3D imaging allows our dentist to choose the best location for implant placement and guided surgery allows for the accurate placement of your implants.

Cost of Dental Implants

While it is impossible to determine your exact treatment costs without first examining your smile, dental implants are generally more expensive than traditional tooth replacement options. If budget is your primary concern, you might want to consider removable dentures or traditional crowns and bridges. However, if you care more about the quality of your results, dental implants are undoubtedly the best method.

While we work with most dental insurance providers, they do not cover the cost of dental implants. However, the cost of your custom restoration may be covered, and we are happy to help you determine your expected out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins.

Long-Term Value

It is also important to consider the long-term savings of dental implants. By replacing the underlying roots of your tooth, implants can prevent serious oral health problems and future costly restorative procedures. Furthermore, implant-supported restorations last longer than traditional prosthetics and will need fewer replacements over the course of a lifetime.

Our Cedar City practice offers flexible financing through CareCredit® to reduce your initial out-of-pocket expenses and make treatment more affordable.

Invest in Your Smile and Oral Health Contact Us for a Dental Implant Consultation

When you are missing even a single tooth, your jawbone no longer receives the stimulation the tooth roots once provided, and the jaw can begin to deteriorate. If left untreated, further tooth loss can occur. By investing in dental implants in a timely manner, our Cedar City practice can help you prevent the need for bone grafting or more expensive restorations later.

Though dental implants are an investment, many patients report being satisfied with the outcome. Implants are the only proven restorative dentistry treatment that can stop bone loss, provide maximum stability for your custom restoration, and improve oral health.

Don't wait. Request a consultation at our Cedar City dental practice by contacting us online or by giving us a call.

Is Implant Surgery Painful?

All surgeries have some level of discomfort and require a recovery time. For your dental implant surgery, Dr. Tavoian can greatly reduce your pain with general anesthesia and IV sedation.

If the prospect of undergoing dental implant surgery makes you anxious, sedation dentistry can put you at ease. Risks associated with anesthesia are very small and Dr. Tavoian has been helping patients feel calm and comfortable for more than 30 years.

The Recovery Process  After Implant Surgery

After your dental implant surgery at our Cedar City, UT, office, we will give you detailed instructions on how to manage the side effects. In general, our dentist recommends the following after your implant procedure:

Eat Soft Foods

Patients should eat soft foods like eggs, yogurt, and applesauce while the bone fuses with the implant. Harder foods can be reintroduced into your diet as the gum and bone tissue heals.

Use Ice Packs

Swelling and bruising can be managed with ice packs for the first few days after your procedure. Elevating your head while you sleep can reduce swelling.

Brush and Floss Gently

Do not brush or floss around your implants the first day after your surgery. Use warm salt water to remove food debris from the treatment site instead. After a week, you can gently brush and floss around your dental implants. You will likely experience some gum bleeding the first few days you start brushing again.

Apply Gauze

Patients will experience some minor bleeding after their implant surgery. Gauze can be applied to the treatment site to stop the bleeding.

If you experience excessive bleeding or pain days after your dental implant surgery, contact our Cedar City, UT, office immediately.
