Dental Crowns

Tooth decay, cracked or chipped teeth, and other types of dental damage can negatively affect your oral and overall health.

We can restore the function and appearance of your smile with natural-looking dental crowns.

Dr. Brian K. Tavoian's practice in Cedar City, UT, offers crowns customized to your smile using premium materials and the latest techniques.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped shell that fits over a damaged tooth. They are also used following treatment for decay or infection, such as after a root canal. Crowns provide strength and protection, preserving the tooth structure and preventing further damage or the need for an extraction. Our crowns are custom-designed to blend in beautifully with your smile; they can even be used cosmetically to improve the look of a healthy tooth that is discolored or misshapen.

We Offer Same-Days Crowns Thanks to CEREC Technology

Our practice offers both traditional crowns crafted in a lab and same-day crowns milled right in our office in just an hour. Same-day crowns offer convenience, but patients may prefer a traditional crown for many reasons, such as when repairing a prominent front tooth. Dr. Tavoian will discuss your options so you can make the right choice for your smile.

I'm so glad I looked them up online and found him. I've had the fear of going to the dentist all my life, and I don't like needles to get filling done . All I can say is give this gentleman a try. Your fear will turn to trust, and that is worth 10 stars.

Dental Crown Costs Financing is Available

Cost Factors

Every patient is unique, and the cost of their treatment is no different. The cost for your dental crown will vary based on several factors, including:

  • If you have one tooth or multiple teeth that require a crown
  • The type of material used
  • Any preparatory treatment such as a root canal

During your initial consultation, your dentist will craft a custom treatment plan, and we can then provide you with an accurate quote.

Financing Options

We do not want financial barriers to prevent patients from receiving quality dental care. We work with most dental insurance providers. This can reduce or even eliminate out-of-pocket costs associated with dental crown treatment.

We also accept CareCredit® financing, so you have the option of paying for dentistry treatment over several months rather than upfront. CareCredit is a reputable financing company that has helped many patients afford the dental care they need.

Candidacy for Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are also known as caps since they are designed to fit over the top of a tooth to provide support and restore dental function. A dental crown can treat a variety of concerns, including:

Dental Damage

Dental damage such as chips and cracks, severe decay, large fillings, or significant wear due to grinding or other bad habits can be treated with crowns at our Cedar City practice. We can also treat severe dental damage that has occurred as a result of injury.

Root Canal Infection

A tooth that has been weakened by infection can be strengthened with a crown after root canal therapy. First, the canals of the tooth will be cleaned to eliminate infection and prevent re-infection. Next, the canals are filled with a synthetic substance, and then our dentist can begin the dental crown treatment process.

Cosmetic Issues

Misalignment, disproportionate teeth, discolored teeth, and other cosmetic concerns can be addressed with crowns. When cosmetic issues affect the front-facing teeth and no dental damage is present, we may recommend veneers. Crowns are a good option if patients have cosmetic issues on the back teeth or cosmetic and health issues affecting the front teeth.

A Missing Tooth

A single missing tooth can be replaced by pairing the crown with a dental implant. This process involves the surgical placement of a dental implant, a metal post that acts as an artificial tooth root. After a healing period, the custom crown can be attached to the implant to restore the smile.

The Placement Process For a Traditional Crown

Our dentist will check the fit of your permanent crown to ensure you are satisfied with the results.
Our dentist will check the fit of your permanent crown to ensure you are satisfied with the results.

Dental Exam

During your initial consultation at our Cedar City practice, our dentist will perform a comprehensive oral examination and determine if a crown is the right treatment for you. He will discuss the pros and cons of same-day crowns and traditional crowns so you can make an informed decision about your treatment.

Before we begin your procedure, we will administer local anesthesia to thoroughly numb the treatment site. For those who suffer from dental anxiety or are undergoing extensive treatment, we can discuss sedation dentistry options to help make treatment more comfortable.

Tooth Preparation

Next Dr. Tavoian will prepare your tooth by gently removing a small amount of enamel. This process ensures that your crown fits comfortably over your tooth without appearing bulky.

Once your tooth is prepared, we will take a series of digital impressions using our advanced imaging technology, iTero®. We can also take putty impressions if needed. Precise impressions enable us to design and craft porcelain and zirconia crowns that look and feel natural.

Temporary Crown

To protect the tooth while the lab fabricates your restoration, patients receiving a traditional crown will have a temporary crown placed over their tooth. Try to exercise more care when wearing the temporary crown. For example, when flossing, pull the floss out laterally rather than pushing the floss back up against the temporary crown. You should also avoid eating hard or chewy foods in this area of the mouth.

Our dentist will work with our lab to design a porcelain or zirconia crown that fits comfortably in your mouth and blends in with surrounding teeth.

The next step for traditional crowns is fabrication at our partner lab. Your dental crown is carefully crafted to blend seamlessly into your smile. Fabrication of the permanent crown typically takes about two weeks.

Final Placement

When your custom porcelain or zirconia crown is ready, you will return to our Cedar City practice for placement. During your visit, our dentist will check the fit of your permanent crown to ensure you are satisfied with the results. The crown will then be bonded to your tooth for a fully restored smile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Q. Does dental crown placement hurt?

A. No. Your dentist will thoroughly numb the area before your treatment begins. We also offer sedation options to ensure you are completely comfortable during your procedure. After placement, your crown should look, feel, and function just like a natural tooth.

Q. Why not just pull a damaged tooth?

A. Extraction is considered a last resort. Even a single missing tooth can cause further oral health issues, such as shifting teeth and tooth loss. Preserving teeth also helps keep your jawbone strong. The jaw requires stimulation from the tooth roots to remain healthy. It can atrophy if it loses this stimulation, which may mean you need extensive dental work later such as dental implants or bone grafting. A dental crown preserves the tooth structure so your jaw still receives stimulation from the root.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental crowns?

A. Porcelain veneers are an alternative to crowns if your concerns are just cosmetic. However, veneers are best for anterior teeth as they are thinner than a crown and may not hold up as well to the forces the back teeth require to chew food. Tooth-colored composite fillings are an option to repair minor damage from tooth decay, but more significant damage will require a crown.

Q. How long will a dental crown last?

A. With proper care and maintenance, a dental crown can last for up to 15 years or more. To care for your restoration, be sure to maintain good oral hygiene. Brush at least twice a day, and don't forget to floss. Be sure to visit our Cedar City dental practice for regular exams and cleanings to keep your smile healthy and beautiful for years to come.
